“Working with communities across Greenock, Alicia Matthews will explore the Inverclyde witch trials and the echoes of this phenomenon in women’s lives today. Through ceramics, walking, film, conversation and creative workshops the project brings historical persecution and past social narratives into dialogue with contemporary experiences including maternal mental health, ageing and women’s unpaid labour. Also considered is the enduring archetype of the witch: feared and persecuted, but also reclaimed as a symbol of female power, autonomy and liberation. Bringing together folklore, local history and contemporary experience, the residency will culminate at Galoshans Festival 2026.
